How to Prepare for Summer Power Outages
Posted by: Javier Vilchis | 04/23/2019 at 11:57 AMSummer power outages can be a pain with no A/C or way to keep cool. That doesn’t mean you have to be without options. Here are a few tips, so you’re not left in the dark about what to do if you experience a summer power outage.
- Keep the cold in. Close the door on the refrigerator and freezer. It’s tempting to keep it open, but food in your freezer will stay fresh for 36-48 hours if you keep the door closed. A Styrofoam cooler works well for your refrigerated items for extended periods.
- Made in the shade. When the power outage hits, the temperature can climb quickly inside. Keep the curtains and blinds closed on the sunniest part of your house. You’ll keep the cool air inside, where it should be.
- Emergency kit tools. Think of all things you’d need if you were without power for a day or two. Your medications, battery-powered radio and extra cash should be at the first. Check out a full list of things to start your emergency outage kit.
- Lights, action. Turn off all of the lights, ceiling fans, A/C and appliances.
- Stay hydrated. Keep extra bottled water and other fluids to make sure you’re not dehydrated. Drinking water at room temperature will still hydrate you.
